There is something different about this place, a good different. In a country filled with typical salty Chinese food, I've come to be a little discouraged when I try a new Chinese restaurant. When I sat down at Golden Gate to have some lunch I was surprised, a little more than surprised actually. A buddy of mine tells me about this place a while back, but I always dreaded the trek back and forth from Atlanta to Clayton. Amidst these streets and corners, you'll find plenty of fast food and the usual tiring cheap eats. The local businesses here have a short life expectancy, possibly because the general patrons that reside in this area prefer a quicker cheaper bite. So why does Golden Gate survive all these bad signs for business? Because it offers something different that has everyone agreeing, they serve great food at a good price! Most items on the menu are typical and familar to the inexperienced foodie, but will still offer a few items that are only a few restaurants in Georgia offer. If I lived in this area, I wouldn't have to travel all the way to Doraville for good Asian food anymore, I would just pop right on over to Golden Gate. The meats are on the lower quality side, but they cook it so well with a variety of spices and sauces that it will redeem the dish. The sizzling beef came out chewy, but I couldn't expect much for the pricing, it was still satisfying.

This is my go to Chinese spot if I'm too lazy to drive to Buford Highway. The owners are very friendly...I kinda wish that they would replace the carpet but the food is still good and I know that it is always constant.

Terrible! I've gone through a lot of trouble to post this. So, hopefully you heed my warning. I ordered the orange chicken with steamed rice. Not only was it $10, it was atrocious. The pieces of chicken were huge, not very well coated, and the sauce was really sweet and watery. Even the steamed rice was bad! I usually go to Panda Express and order the same thing. However, there you get 2 entrees and your choice of rice or noodles for $7. The food there, at every location that I've tried, has been exceptional. But, due to the distance, I decided to give this place a chance. Never again! But...hey... the choice is yours. My choice is to drive a little further.

This place serves very good Cantonese food, especially the roasted duck and the house fried rice. We also tried the salt and pepper squid which is also very good.

Vietnamese-style Chinese food. Don't come here expecting 100% authentic Chinese-style Chinese food. However everything is flavorful and tasty, but with a slightly Vietnamese twist. The place is usually packed, mostly with Vietnamese clientele.

I love it here! Authentic Chinese food with a twist of Vietnamese food. The staff is super friendly and the food never fails me. My family and I go here probably twice to four times a month. It's the best authentic Chinese food down south!

Ordered to go and picked up for my family while on vacation. Excellent chinese food the fried rice was super soft and very tasty. Lo mien, and hunnan beef both terrific as well. I'm not even much of a Chinese food fan but I enjoyed this.

I have been eating at Golden Gate for as long as I can remember. My experiences go bacteria to their old building before they moved into the current location. The staff is mostly family and they always recognize my family when we done in even after being away for long periods of time. This is by far the best Chinese in Atlanta. Their Mongolian Beef has to be the best around. I have yet to come across a restaurant that has a better version. I will go out of my way to eat here all the way from Locust Grove. I will always return.

Must admit, i've only gone to Golden Gate when coworkers were dying for Chinese a couple of times. The food is reminiscent of food you might find at Chinese restaurants in strip malls, which is not to say that it's bad, but nothing to me stood out. I got the Buddha delight, which were plenty of veggies, brown rice, egg roll and your choice of soup (I tried wonton, which wasn't bad). I think my view of the soup is my review in a nutshell...it wasn't bad. Portion sizes are huge, and I do remember from my last visit that the sesame chicken IS tasty, but the veggies were a little bland. That blandness continued this visit. Price for one is about $7 for a decent meal and if you come in with a big party, you can sit at the larger tables that spin, always fun! As others have said, it's an old Wendy's location, but instead of a value menu, you're greeted with hanging roasted ducks and a large aquarium (no clue if you can order any of the fish to eat). Enjoyable staff, who were not only nice but came over to crack jokes and make us all laugh, so kudos there! Decent restaurant that can feel you up for cheap.

Fast quick friendly service! Try the Jong Pong!!!! A great soup with everything in it!!

Definitely better than most. Egg drop soup has large slices of onion giving a unique flavor twist. Chicken cashew was good. You can ask for additional or less spice on most dishes. The "hanging" ducks looked good but did not try this time. Serving staff extremely friendly. Try it; even Dave (from Wendy's) would approve! (Read other reviews referring to the building.)

It's an OK place to me. Not that bad but not that good to be 4 or 5 star. I still come back....someday...

I was super skeptical about coming to this place but after stepping into the restaurant, my fears were slowly put to ease. This is a Chinese restaurant that serves Cantonese and Szechuan style food. It's housed in an old Wendy's restaurant. The staff is very friendly and they cater to pretty much whatever you need. The food quality is pretty good. I'd rate it a 4 out of 5 (I was expecting something really low to begin with). - Sizzling Beef on Hot Iron - the dish as described comes out super hot and with a bit of a kick from some pepper they give. The vegetables consisting of napa, broccoli, carrots, and onions are well cooked (just crunchy enough that you can enjoy the texture but don't have any sort of raw taste to them). The beef is soft and tender and is great when you put it in your mouth (just be careful, it's hot!). It also comes with rice! - Noodles with Beef (dry style). We got try noodles from the Cantonese menu (I believe it's the first item on the noodle menu). It came out with the long ho fun style noodles and they mix in green onions, onions, and beef. It's super tasty so if you're looking for a dish to split, this is a nice one to try. The portion sizes are all really big. We came here for lunch and probably have enough for another meal afterwards. We paid about $9 per dish before tax and tip (you might pay more for more specialized dishes or seafood dishes). I'd definitely recommend them if you're looking for Chinese because it's difficult to find.

I love this place. My niece and I have been coming here for years. For the price I will give it 5 Stars. I am a fan of the Sesame Chicken and the Beef Fried Rice. However, that is not the only thing on the menu that I like and since I have been going there for so many years I know to ask for some things that are not on the menu. :) And the current location is in an old Wendy's building.

I've been going here for Chinese with my family since I was a baby and at their older location. (Where the Golden Gate Plaza is now next to it) We go there so much after so many years, the owners know us, and know our "usuals." They are family ran, so the service is very inviting and nice. The owner also speaks a decent amount of Vietnamese, which is good for the area it's located in because of the large Vietnamese population. We usually go for dinner, and they're pretty quick at getting your order and food out. I am pretty picky about fried rice, and in my opinion, nothing beats theirs. I really like their wonton soup too. It's just thick wonton sheets, in broth, and sprinkled with scallions and BBQ Char Siu. YUMM! There's not many places down south to eat good Chinese food and the drive up to Buford Hwy is pretty long, but this is an amazing place. Most locals know about it, so that means it's good!

We've been going here for over 15 years! The staff is very welcoming and quite funny at times joking around with regulars. The food is delicious to me. Love the Mongolian beef and the egg rolls are my favorite in the area! They serve refreshing orange slices with the fortune cookies. Always take leftovers home.

Since moving to Atlanta from Chicago, my girlfriend and I have been trying to find a solid Chinese restaurant to call home. To its credit, Golden Gate beats the socks off the everyday strip mall carry-out Chinese restaurants that seem to be everywhere here in Atlanta, but in the grand scheme of Chinese restaurants this place's food just isn't that great. I had the egg drop soup (decent), and the Imperial Shrimp, which was essentially shrimp in watery ketchup...if i wasnt really wanting this place to be good, I would have sent it back. My girlfriend had the Beef and Scallops which was okay, but nothing to write home about. We also split a bean curd (tofu) and seafood soup for 2. This was the best thing we had, a decent amount of seafood in a pretty good broth. The saving grace for this place was the price... All of that food was only $23, which isn't too bad for a lot of mediocre food. The dinner menu is massive, and there is the real chance we ordered somethings they dont specialize in, and should have stuck to some of the more traditional Americanized Cantonese items...but we were looking for something with a little more mojo. I'd be willing to try eating here again one day, but they're gonna have to step it up.

Great restaurant! I took my mom and brother there for her birthday, and i must say, all their dishes were excellent. Not greasy, perfectly seasoned, perfectly done. Their rice was nicely done too. The only complaint is that alhtough we ordered 3 different dishes, they were pretty much identical. Each dish, had it been on its own, would have stood out, but when all three stir-fry-in-sauce dishes were put together, it gets a little old. However, because they were all so good, we didn't mind. plus, we had leftovers for lunch the next day :D Service was prompt and courteous.

Nestled inside what looks to be an old Wendy's, Golden Gate is a family run Cantonese restaurant with the somewhat spartan decor you often see in these kinds of places. It's all about the food, of course, and Golden Gate delivers. As Melissa has stated, their basic menu will take you down 'gringo road' so to speak unless you go off trail and order from their dinner menu. That's where the gems are and the Canton dishes come into their own. She and I have tried our way through a good deal of the menu and the Beef with Sour Mustard Greens as well as their excellent array of hot pots have risen to become my favorites. They offer traditional roast duck and pork and my only 'gripe' is that I wish they served steam buns to go with them. They are very takeout friendly and every time we've gone they are always doing good to-go business. The portions at Golden Gate are always generous and so is the staff. Even though Melissa and I eat there perhaps once a month, sometimes less, they always remember us and several people always stop by to say hello. At first we thought it might be because we're the white people who will pretty much try anything but I think that that is just how the family who runs Golden Gate is. Gracious and sincere. That alone is enough to keep people coming back but it sure doesn't hurt that their food is outstanding. Venture off the basic menu and give it a try! Golden Gate is a great place run by great people.

The food was delivered late and the delivery driver was very rude and did nothing but curse at us the whole time he was here. I will never order from here again! Terrible service!!

I may be going out on a limb, but this is the best Chinese food in Atlanta. Please note that if you go in for lunch and want something a little less gringo than sweet and sour chicken, ask for the dinner menu. It is about 12 pages long and they have an entire section dedicated to sea cucumber if that tells you anything. My favorite dishes include the won ton and noodle soup, the beef with pickled greens, and salt and pepper shrimp among others. I've tried the sea cucumber and the chicken feet but they were more curiosities than delectable dishes I would order again. It's a texture thing. I can tell you this, one of these days I am going to order one of the whole roasted ducks they have hanging in the front. They look freaking amazing. The service is always quick and wonderful. I only live a few miles from here so I go in somewhat frequently and the staff knows us now and will ask about my brother who I bring there when he comes to visit. And did I mention it's affordable? You really can't ask for more! Let's recap: 1.) AMAZING food 2.) Really great service 3.) Family owned and operated (really nice people) 4.) Affordable prices

After months of looking for good places to eat in Georgia, I think I've found the best place for some authentic Chinese Food. Unlike many other places such as China Star, Empire of China II, and even restaurants on Buford Hwy, Golden Gate Chinese Restaurant serves the most authentic Chinese food south of Atlanta. I have to admit, the exterior of the restaurant had me worried. Like a previous review noted, it looked a lot like a run down Wendy's, so we didn't know what to expect. When we walked in, we were greeted by a Chinese waitress, who made sure we got everything we needed. She really looked like enjoyed her job :). The menu had the typical "asian" dishes such as Sweet and Sour Pork, Egg Foo Young etc.. This was one of the things that made me not want to go to other "chinese" restaurants because they consisted of the typical "asian" foods that Americans are used to. But this restaurant had a wide variety of items on their menu! They had Scallop, hot pot, and Lo Mein! Moving from California, I was expecting a lot out of this restaurant, trying to find the next Samkee, or Asiana Garden! And I think i've found it! I will definitly come back to this restaurant, as it is close to my house. I really hated driving up North to Buford Hwy just to get some good Chinese Food. Hope I found this restaurant sooner!

I've travelled to Atlanta a few times and have tried a few of the chinese restaurants. And Golden Gate is definitely at the top of my list. Having grown up in southeast asia, I'm always looking for chinese food that tastes like home. I was visiting Atlanta for work and so II went there alone for dinner and ordered off the second half of the menu, i.e. the Authentic Cantonese section. I had roast duck (1/2 a duck for only $9.50) entree and another entree of pork rib with bitter melon stirfry (the fact that is is on the menu gives them huge thumbs up!). The duck was simply delicious, well seasoned and the skin was crisp! And I was happy that they had the traditional brown sauce to dip the duck in. Next, the pork rib with bitter melon dish was very authentic, reminded me of traditional meals with my parents and grandma. I was so happy with these dishes that I thought I'd order another, but I couldn't eat that much more, so I thought I'd order a "smaller" dish and tried the Shrimp Egg Foo Yong from the "americanized" section. I was disappointed, it's not the traditional dish I grew up with. It was a mix of egg and flour with onions and shrimp in it, and deep fried as a doughnut, then it's covered in what I can best describe as a brown gravy as found on mash potato. In summary, my experience from the authentic cantonese cuisine menu is phenomenal, but I would steer clear of the americanized menu. Definitely will recommend to all my friends!

This is my new favorite chinese restaurant. They are so fast and the food is excellent. The prices are decent, too. It's a great place to go on your lunch break or if you're really hungry and need food ASAP. You order and in a second it's there. It's almost scary but I can't complain.

Chinese Cuisine

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.

Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.

There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
